Chrabot defeats Olympian at Pan American Champs in Mexico

April 20, 2008

chrabot.jpgMazatlan, Mexico – Virginia Beach’s own pro triathlete Matt Chrabot, a ’01 graduate of Kempsville High School and member of Coastal Racing, won the Mazatlan PATCO Triathlon Pan American Championship this weekend, increasing his chances for placement on the official World’s Team and the Des Moines World Cup, which is the last US Olympic Trials race.

As a relative newcomer to the International Triathlon Union elite team, Chrabot’s win this weekend at the 2008 PATCO Triathlon Pan American Championships in the resort city of Mazatlan, Mexico was a major victory.  He ran away with the continental titles after thrilling breakaways on the bike in both competitions surprised many top veterans who were unable to close the gap. This is the first major title a young athlete and makes it the second year in a row for the U.S. sweep of the gold medals.

Check out our Photo Gallery (under Spring 2008) for photos from Mexico newspapers - the surf was huge!

The 24-year old Chrabot, who’s previous best result was a second at the 2007 Kelowna Pan American Cup, comfortably finished in a time of 1 hour 47 minutes and 9 seconds, over a minute ahead of 2008 Olympian and pre-race favorite Jarrod Shoemaker from the U.S. Shoemaker, who skipped this weekend’s U.S. Olympic Trials as he has already qualified for Beijing, managed to nudge out Francisco Serrano of Mexico in a final sprint for the silver.

“I live in Virginia so I am used to these kinds of aggressive waves,” said Chrabot of the 15-foot waves greeting the athletes as they started the ocean swim. “I expect the same race in my next competition at the [Richards Bay] World Cup.”

Chrabot broke away early in the bike leg with only one other athlete after exiting the water in first, building his lead to insurmountable two minutes 30 seconds after the bike. From there it was a battle for second as the young American’s proven run speed ushered him to his career’s first ITU title.

“I just won the biggest race of my life,” Chrabot said in an email to local friends. His parents, Gerard and Nancy Chrabot, live in Virginia Beach. Chrabot is a member of local multi-sport racing club Coastal Racing, and hosts training clinics for members when he is in town. Chrabot will be in Virginia Beach in May is planning on racing in the local Breezy Point triathlon in June.

For new members, here is Matt's Bio he sent us last year in his member profile:

Nickname:  Chrabot, Skeletor
Age: 24
Occupation: Triathlete
Are you a native to this area? Yes
Where are you living now: Virginia Beach
How you got into your chosen sport:  I started racing lifeguard competitions with Virginia Beach Lifesaving Service while in high school and liked the idea of combining swimming, running, and paddle board racing into one event.  After I read the article on Lance Armstrong as Sportsman of the Year in the December 2002 Sports Illustrated, I was inspired to get a road bike.
Favorite Race:  Escape from Alcatraz
Why you love Coastal Racing:  It's the first triathlon club in my home town!  Plus I believe it's one of the most organized and motivated sports clubs in Hampton Roads.
Racing Goals:  Place top 3 in a Continental Cup this year and not make any poor tactical decisions that will cost me later in the race...
Advice for others or newbies?  If you train like an animal, race like one.  If you like to build into your workouts, build into your races.  Race day isn't the day to change up tactics or try new things.
Any weird race day traditions?  I like drinking coffee, but never drink any if a triathlon or running race starts before 9 AM.  I think if you can take caffeine (in regards to being a diuretic) right before the start of a race you're not pushing yourself hard enough, either that or you have an iron stomach; for that matter I envy you.
Favorite movie:  The Departed
Hobbies:  Surfing, Sailing, Spearfishing, Fishing, Sleeping
