Sponsored Charity
Coastal Racing Club has partnered with charitable organization Bikes for the World (BFTW) at this race and will help collect used bicycles and bike parts for underdeveloped communities overseas.
Families are encouraged to drop off unwanted bicycles and bike parts on Sunday, August 17th from 9am to 2pm at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex. The collection is held in conjunction with the club's inaugural criterium cycling race.
"Bikes for the World welcomes this partnership with Coastal Racing Club," said BFTW director Keith Oberg. "We are working towards partnerships with more and more communities up and down the East Coast, to share our enthusiasm for what bikes can do for others."
Club liaison Maria Poranski is looking forward to meeting families and children who are dropping bicycles off. "This is a great opportunity to clean out those garages and donate bikes that your kids have outgrown," Poranski said."Not only that, but our community can watch a fun bike race at the same time and see how cycling can be a life-long sport."
Volunteers will collect repairable or better-condition complete (or nearly-complete) bicycles and usable bike parts, for donation in developing countries.
1. Bicycles
We accept ANY serviceable bicycle, adult or children's, accompanied by a suggested $10 per bike donation to defray a share of the costs in getting bikes to quality programs overseas and get information back for donors and the public. Flat tires or a missing seat or pedal matter little. Mountain bikes are the most-desired models. Also highly desirable are fat-tired one-speed "cruisers", three-speed touring bicycles, and good-quality men's road bicycles. We also accept tandems, recumbents, adult tricycles, trail-a-bikes, and even unicycles.
2. Bike-related items
In addition, we gratefully accept most bicycle spare parts and components (e.g., tubes, tires, chains, cables, and mountain bike handlebars, but not "drop" handlebars), accessories (e.g., pumps, locks, helmets, gloves), bicycle books and manuals, bicycle tools (including wrenches, screwdrivers, and hammers), and operating portable sewing machines. These items fit well within the shipments of bicycles, adding value without displacing bicycles, and are much welcomed.
